He was born in Leggiuno, on the shores of Lake Maggiore, to a family of modest means: his mother Edis was a housewife, while his father Ugo worked first as a hairdresser and then as a tailor.

In 1999, the specialized magazine World Soccer ranked him 72nd among the best soccer players of the 20th century, while in 2011 he was inducted into the Italian soccer Hall of Fame among Veterans.

Family Life

From the relationship with Gianna Tofanari, Gigi Riva''''s two children, Nicola and Mauro, were born, who went on to give the couple five grandchildren, all girls, Virginia, Ilaria, Sofia, Gaia, and Cecilia, ages 21 to 7.
